Life prior to chronic kidney disease was good and I enjoyed good health, exercising and leading a normal life. Once diagnosed with TTP which happened quickly and resulted in end stage chronic kidney disease I was dependant on dialysis. I found this intrusive and my quality of life greatly compromised. I felt fatigued, nauseated and suffered the effects of bone degeneration. The repeated dialysis treatment every second day was disheartening as I never got better and the best I could do was manage the treatment. It did not allow me to lead a normal life like my other friends.
I was extremely lucky that my brother offered me a kidney and we were especially lucky that we were a 6/6 antigen match. Thanks to an exceptional renal team at Royal Prince Alfred, the transplant went smoothly and without any complications. The management of my renal health post transplant has been exceptional thanks to Prof Stephen Chadban.
Thanks to my transplant, I have enjoyed the last five years of good health and have been able to run faster and further prior to the illness. I am now the proud mother of Emerson who was born in March 2009 and everyday I’m thankful for all those who have helped me achieve my dream of becoming a mother.
Daniela’s story is one of inspiration for all those battling kidney disease. Kidney Health Australia actively helps people like Daniela through the tough times by providing them with vital information, accommodation when necessary and respite for their carers through our respite programs. In addition to these programs Kidney Health Australia has also been able to give over $22 million to research programs.
The money raised through the BIG RED BBQ allows Kidney Health Australia to fund these vital programs and continue our fight against kidney disease.
